Rehabilitation centre Groot Klimmendaal is a partly publically accessible building with a diversity of (care)functions. It comprises a sports centre, a swimming pool, a theatre with a foyer, a restaurant, a dentistry, a (poly)clinic, apartments, offices and various other facilities. Groot Klimmendaal is compact, efficient, full of character and fully profits from the green surroundings. The building deliberately does not have the appearance of a health building but is open, transparent and accessible.
The building and the surrounding landscape, both designed by Koen van Velsen architects, mark the first phase of an extensive masterplan. The masterplan foresees in the concentration of the existing functions
in three new compact and high-quality buildings and into the transformation of the terrain into a green park for rehabilitation and the local community.
In 2010 Groot Klimmendaal was awarded Building of the Year by the Association of Dutch Architects. In the same year the building also won the city of Arnhem’s Heuvelink Award, the first Hedy d’Ancona Award for excellent healthcare architecture and the Dutch Design public award. In 2011, the building was a finalist in the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award and awarded world health building of the year during the World Architecture Festival.
