The Rotterdam Education and Rehabilitation centre (ROeR)
combines special education, rehabilitation, work (offices), daycare, sports and
parking in one single building. The ROeR accommodates four schools (primary and
secondary special education) and Rijndam Rehabilitation.
Over 350 children aged 0 to 18 use the building daily for
education and rehabilitation, with the goal to participating in the community
as fully as possible. Education and rehabilitation play a vital role. These
functions were previously dispersed and isolated. In the new building they are
now spatially and organizationally intertwined.
The new building is welcoming, distinctive and vibrant. The
ROeR offers a rich experience and excellent functionality, whilst fitting
seamlessly in the existing residential neighbourhood. The ROeR is deliberately
low-rise and fully organised at ground floor-level, with rooftop parking and
prioritizing accessibility, visibility, and the experience of nature. The new
building opens up to the neighbourhood and acts as a catalyst for social
connection, amongst others through sports and leisure activities. The close
collaboration between education and healthcare is evident in the short walking
distances, shared spaces and joint organization. This results in a building
which functioned from day one and contributes to an inclusive future for
children with disabilities.
