Public swimming pool Heerlen
2025

The transformation of the Franciscus van Assisi-church into a public swimming pool is a unique example of how religious heritage can be preserved in an innovative way. The pool has been integrated into the existing church with considered precision. The monumental character of the church offers a unique swimming experience. A series of new diamond-shaped skylights, together with the expressive timber truss structure, defines the atmosphere. The swimming pool has a distinctly public character and aligns with the historical function of the church as a meeting place.

The entrance, central reception hall and facilities are housed in a new extension: a contemporary interpretation of the church's sculptural character. The existing roof shape of the transept arm is continued around the new volume, in harmony with the church building. The all-round character is enhanced by a walkway overlooking the cloister garden. The combination of existing and new elements results in an optimal balance between operating costs, sustainability and the iconic value of the city pool.

The design is the result of a collaboration between Koen van Velsen architects and Office Winhov.
