The new
swimming pool and residential complex in Haarlem has been integrated in the
city with considered precision. The compact design with green courtyards
reinforces the existing structure of the Planetenwijk neighbourhood. The green
urban park surrounding the swimming pool and the residential units contributes
to biodiversity, climate adaptation, social safety, and connects the new
complex with the sportspark and Schoterbos. The new ensemble results in an
environment in which living, sport, and nature seamlessly come together.
The new swimming pool will have a recognizable and accessible presence on the
Planetenlaan, flanked residential buildings of a human-scale. The
well-considered positioning of the building volumes result in views, an
abundance of daylight and privacy.
Architecturally,
the ensemble is inspired by the New Hague School, with robust forms, clean
lines, and a warm, contemporary feel. The plinth binds living, sports, and
parking into a single, cohesive gesture. Transparency, sightlines and central
spaces and courtyards provide clarity, orientation, and social cohesion. All
functions of the swimming complex are logically organised on a single building
level, with clear routing and separate user flows. Sustainable materials,
reuse, and integrated energy and water solutions make the design progressively
sustainable, future-proof, and meaningful for the neighbourhood.
The design is the result of a collaboration between Koen van Velsen architects
and Popma ter Steege Architects.
